How to find the right nursery near you

  1. 1. Start with your area

Choose your county or town above to see every nursery we list there, or search near your postcode. Think about the commute too: a nursery near work can suit some families better than one near home.

  2. 2. Check the Ofsted grade

Every nursery in England is inspected by Ofsted. Outstanding and Good are the grades to look for, and each nursery page on Toddle links to its latest report.

  3. 3. Compare fees and funded hours

Look at the day rate, what it includes (meals, nappies, trips) and whether the nursery takes the 15 or 30 funded hours. Our cost calculator shows what you'd pay each month.

  4. 4. Ask early about baby places

Baby rooms are small and fill first. If your child will be under 2 when they start, contact nurseries 6 to 12 months ahead and ask about waiting lists.

  5. 5. Match the hours you need

Day nurseries usually open all year from early morning to early evening; pre-schools and nursery schools often follow school terms. Check opening hours and holiday closures.

  6. 6. Visit before you decide

Go and see two or three. Watch how staff talk to the children, ask about key workers, settling in and outdoor time, and trust how it feels.

Types of childcare near you

Day nurseries
Private or chain nurseries open all day, all year, usually from around 6 months to 5 years. The most common choice for working parents, and the ones most often called a daycare or private nursery.
Baby rooms
The part of a day nursery for under-2s, with more staff per child (one adult to three babies). Places are limited, so they fill first.
Nursery schools and nursery classes
For 3 and 4 year olds, often attached to a primary school and following school terms. A gentle step towards Reception.
Pre-schools and playgroups
Shorter sessions for 2 to 5 year olds, often run by a charity or committee and closed in the school holidays. Many take funded hours only.
Montessori and forest school nurseries
Nurseries with a particular approach: child-led Montessori learning, or a day spent largely outdoors at forest school.
Childminders
Registered carers looking after a small group of children in their own home, often with flexible hours. Find a childminder

Questions about finding a nursery near you

How do I find a nursery near me?

+

Pick your county or town on this page, or search by town or postcode in Toddle's nursery search. Each location page lists every nursery we have there, best rated first, with Ofsted grades, published day rates, ages, opening times and funded hours, and Doddle can narrow them down to your child's age and the days you need.

How much does nursery cost near me?

+

Among the 315 nurseries on Toddle that publish a day rate, a typical full day costs about £71, and most charge between £58 and £84. Five days a week at £71 comes to roughly £1,540 a month before funded hours. Of the counties where at least 5 nurseries publish a rate, the typical day rate is lowest in Bedfordshire (£47), Lincolnshire (£47) and Derbyshire (£50) and highest in Surrey (£105), Greater London (£90) and Essex (£86).

How many nurseries near me are rated Outstanding?

+

310 of the 1,014 nurseries on Toddle (31%) are rated Outstanding by Ofsted, and 614 are rated Good. Of the counties with 10 or more nurseries, the highest shares rated Outstanding are in Greater London (62%), Surrey (46%) and Warwickshire (40%). Each nursery page links to its latest Ofsted report.

What is the difference between a day nursery, a nursery school and a pre-school?

+

A day nursery is usually private and open all day, all year, often from around 6 months to 5 years, which suits working parents. A nursery school, or a nursery class in a primary school, takes 3 and 4 year olds and usually follows school terms. A pre-school (or playgroup) is often run by a charity or committee, takes 2 to 5 year olds for shorter sessions and mostly closes in the school holidays. All of them follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and are inspected by Ofsted.

Can I use funded childcare hours at a nursery near me?

+

851 of the nurseries on Toddle say they accept funded hours. In England every 3 and 4 year old can get 15 hours a week for 38 weeks a year, some 2 year olds qualify too, and eligible working parents can get 30 hours a week from when their child is 9 months old until they start school. Nurseries can charge for extras such as meals, but paying for them can't be a condition of getting the funded hours.

When should I start looking for a nursery?

+

As early as you can, especially for a baby place. Baby rooms are small and often fill first, so many parents start looking 6 to 12 months before they go back to work. 809 of the nurseries on Toddle take babies, usually from around 6 months.

Are nurseries near me open all year round?

+

Most are: 799 of the nurseries on Toddle are open all year round, which suits working parents, while 172 run in term time only, as many pre-schools and nursery schools do. Opening hours are on each nursery's page, so you can check early drop-off and late pick-up times before you visit.

Is Toddle free for parents?

+

Yes. Searching, comparing and sending enquiries to nurseries is free for parents. Nurseries list on Toddle directly, and you contact them yourself to visit or book a place.
