Nursery questions in Hampshire

Which postcode areas cover nurseries in Hampshire?

Hampshire uses several postcode areas, principally SO, PO, GU, RG, SP and BH. These cover different parts of the county, from Winchester and Eastleigh to Basingstoke, Farnborough, Andover, Fareham and the New Forest.

Are Southampton and Portsmouth included in Hampshire for childcare funding?

No. Although both cities are geographically within Hampshire, Southampton and Portsmouth are separate unitary authorities and administer their own early years services. Hampshire County Council covers the rest of its current county council area.

How much funded childcare can Hampshire families receive?

All 3 and 4 year olds receive 15 funded hours a week. Eligible working parents can receive up to 30 funded hours a week from 9 months old until school age, normally for 38 weeks of the year.

Can some 2 year olds receive funded childcare without the working parent entitlement?

Yes. Eligible 2 year olds whose families receive additional support can receive up to 15 funded hours a week for 38 weeks, providing 570 hours during their eligible funding year.

Can Hampshire funded hours be spread across more of the year?

Yes, if the childcare provider offers a stretched arrangement. Families can use fewer funded hours each week over more weeks instead of taking the full entitlement during the standard 38 week pattern.

What extra nursery costs might I still have to pay?

Funded hours do not necessarily include meals, nappies, sun cream or additional childcare hours. Providers can charge separately for these services, so it is worth checking what is included before agreeing to a place.

Can I use Tax Free Childcare alongside funded nursery hours?

Yes. Eligible families can use Tax Free Childcare alongside funded hours to help cover approved childcare costs outside the entitlement. The government contributes £2 for every £8 paid into the account, subject to the scheme limits.

What additional support is available for a child with SEND?

Hampshire provides SEN Inclusion Funding and specialist early years support for children who need additional help. Eligible children receiving Disability Living Allowance and funded early education can also attract Disability Access Fund, worth at least £975 a year in 2026 to 2027, for their nominated childcare provider.

Are Hampshire council changes affecting nursery funding now?

No. The government has announced new unitary councils for Hampshire from April 2028, but there are no immediate changes to current services. Hampshire County Council remains responsible for its existing early years services during the transition.
