Nurseries in Blackheath
Looking for nurseries in Blackheath? ToddleKids helps parents compare childcare across Blackheath Village, Blackheath Westcombe and surrounding SE3 areas.
Blackheath has an important complication for parents: the area spans both Lewisham and the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Royal Greenwich confirms that much of the heath south of Shooters Hill Road is within Lewisham, while the northern part is managed by Greenwich. This means 2 nurseries a short distance apart can fall under different councils for funding, SEND inclusion support and local early years services.

What counts?
16 hours a week at the minimum wage for your age: £2,643.68 if you're 21 or over, £2,256.80 if you're 18 to 20, and £1,664.00 if you're under 18 or an apprentice. If you've been self-employed for under 12 months, or you're on parental, sick or annual leave, you can still qualify, and some benefits (such as Carer's Allowance) count for a partner who doesn't work. If you both work, you could get 30 hours a week (1,140 a year).
From 1 January 2029: 15 hours a week (570 a year).
Funded hours start the term after your child reaches the age (9 months for working-parent hours, 2 for the extra-support offer, 3 for the universal 15 hours): on 1 January, 1 April or 1 September. You'll need to reconfirm your details every 3 months.
How will you pay?
- Full weekly fee (before funding)
- £258.00
- Per year, after funding
- £13,416
This is an estimate, not a quote. Nurseries set their own prices, opening weeks and funded-hours patterns, and not all offer funded or stretched places. Check with the nursery. England only.
How we work this out
570 hours a year is 15 hours × 38 weeks; 1,140 is 30 × 38. Term-time funding covers 38 weeks; in every other week your child attends you pay the full fee. Stretched funding spreads the same hours over more weeks (up to 52), so the yearly total is about the same. Funded hours are capped at the hours you use, 30 a week and 10-hour sessions. The monthly figure is the yearly cost ÷ 12.
Funded hours are for education and care and must be free. Nurseries can't charge top-up fees for funded hours, or make you pay for extra hours, registration fees or deposits as a condition of your place. They can offer meals, snacks, nappies and trips as optional extras, and you can choose to bring your own or opt out.
Hours may be pro-rated if your child starts part-way through the year, and funding stops when your child starts reception. Tax-Free Childcare is 20% of what you pay after funding, up to £2,000 a year (£4,000 if your child is disabled). Prices are Toddle averages or the price you enter; meals are a Toddle estimate.

How to Apply for Funded Childcare in Blackheath?

Nursery questions in Blackheath
Which council handles funded childcare for a Blackheath nursery?
It depends on where the childcare setting is located, not where the family lives.
If the nursery is on the Lewisham side of Blackheath, Lewisham funds the place. If the setting is within Royal Greenwich, Greenwich funds it.
Department for Education rules for 2026 to 2027 specifically state that when a child lives in one council area but attends childcare in another, the council where the setting is based is responsible for the funded entitlement, Early Years Pupil Premium and Disability Access Fund.
This makes checking the nursery's exact borough particularly important in Blackheath.
Can working parents get 30 funded childcare hours in Blackheath?
Yes. Eligible working parents can receive up to 30 funded hours a week from the term after their child reaches 9 months until school age.
You need an approved code by:
31 March for an April start
31 August for a September start
31 December for a January start
The government allows applications from when the child is 23 weeks old. Working parent eligibility must also be kept current through the childcare account.
Does John Ball Primary School currently have nursery vacancies?
Lewisham's live childcare directory currently lists John Ball Primary School on Southvale Road, Blackheath, SE3 0TP as having no nursery vacancies.
The school is registered to provide funded early education for both 2 year olds and 3 and 4 year olds.
Parents specifically wanting John Ball should therefore not assume a funded code guarantees a place and should have alternative Blackheath options in mind.
What other school nursery provision is available around the Greenwich side of Blackheath?
Royal Greenwich currently lists several substantial nursery classes in and around SE3.
Brooklands Primary School has 52 published nursery places.
Morden Mount in Blackheath has 104 nursery places.
Invicta School on Invicta Road has 52 nursery places.
These figures are the schools' published nursery capacities, not a statement that vacancies are currently available.
Can I split 30 funded hours between childcare providers in Blackheath?
On the Lewisham side, yes.
Lewisham allows the 30 hour entitlement to be used across up to 3 providers, with no more than 2 providers on the same day.
Lewisham also sets a maximum of 10 funded hours in one day, and funded hours must fall between 6am and 8pm.
This is useful if a Blackheath school nursery does not cover the full working day and a childminder provides the remaining care.
Can funded hours be spread across the whole year in Blackheath?
Yes, where the chosen provider offers a stretched pattern.
Lewisham gives the example of using the annual 1,140 hour entitlement across 48 weeks, which works out at 23.75 funded hours each week instead of 30 hours over 38 weeks.
Royal Greenwich also permits providers to stretch the annual funded entitlement across more weeks. Greenwich warns that if a child leaves a stretched arrangement part way through the year, they will not necessarily have received their entire annual entitlement at that point.
Ask for the provider's exact funded attendance pattern before accepting the place.
Where can Greenwich side Blackheath families get early years support?
Storkway Children's Centre is on Ridgebrook Road, SE3 9QX.
Royal Greenwich also lists Quaggy Children's Centre at Orchard Hill, SE13 7QZ. Morden Mount in Blackheath has Quaggy Children's Centre services on its school site, providing early education, childcare information, health services and family support.
For families using a nursery on the Lewisham side, Lewisham operates its own Best Start Family Hub network with early years practitioners, health visitors, parenting support and SEND advice.
Which SEND team supports a child at a Blackheath nursery?
Again, the borough boundary matters.
Royal Greenwich's Early Years Inclusion Service supports private and voluntary early years providers with SEND. Greenwich also operates a SEND Inclusion Fund for children with identified or emerging additional needs.
Lewisham has its own early years inclusion funding and Early Years Quality and Sufficiency Service. Lewisham also operates a Portage service for eligible young children with additional developmental needs, including support with transition from home into an early years setting.
For 2026 to 2027, the council responsible for the setting also controls its SEN Inclusion Fund, even when the child lives across the borough boundary.
Is extra disability funding available for a child attending nursery in Blackheath?
Yes. Eligible children receiving Disability Living Allowance and funded early education can receive the Disability Access Fund.
For 2026 to 2027, councils must pay at least £975 per eligible child each year to the nominated early years provider.
If a Blackheath child splits funded hours between several settings, the parent nominates one main provider to receive the payment.
