What counts?
16 hours a week at the minimum wage for your age: £2,643.68 if you're 21 or over, £2,256.80 if you're 18 to 20, and £1,664.00 if you're under 18 or an apprentice. If you've been self-employed for under 12 months, or you're on parental, sick or annual leave, you can still qualify, and some benefits (such as Carer's Allowance) count for a partner who doesn't work. Funded hours start the term after your child reaches the age (9 months for working-parent hours, 2 for the extra-support offer, 3 for the universal 15 hours): on 1 January, 1 April or 1 September. You'll need to reconfirm your details every 3 months.

How we work this out
570 hours a year is 15 hours × 38 weeks; 1,140 is 30 × 38. Term-time funding covers 38 weeks; in every other week your child attends you pay the full fee. Stretched funding spreads the same hours over more weeks (up to 52), so the yearly total is about the same. Funded hours are capped at the hours you use, 30 a week and 10-hour sessions. The monthly figure is the yearly cost ÷ 12.
Funded hours are for education and care and must be free. Nurseries can't charge top-up fees for funded hours, or make you pay for extra hours, registration fees or deposits as a condition of your place. They can offer meals, snacks, nappies and trips as optional extras, and you can choose to bring your own or opt out.
Hours may be pro-rated if your child starts part-way through the year, and funding stops when your child starts reception. Tax-Free Childcare is 20% of what you pay after funding, up to £2,000 a year (£4,000 if your child is disabled). Prices are Toddle averages or the price you enter; meals are a Toddle estimate.

What is Toddle?+
Toddle is a free UK nursery finder. It lists 1,015 nurseries, pre-schools and nursery schools, with their fees, Ofsted ratings, ages, opening hours and funded hours, plus Ofsted-registered childminders, so you can compare them and contact the ones you like.
How do I find a nursery near me?+
Type your postcode, town or a nursery's name in the search bar to see the day nurseries, preschools and other childcare near you. How much does nursery cost?+
Among the 316 nurseries on Toddle that publish a day rate, a typical full day costs about £72, and most charge between £58 and £84. Five days a week at £72 comes to roughly £1,560 a month before funded hours. Fees vary a lot by area, and Toddle's cost calculator shows what you'd pay after funded hours.
Can I use 15 or 30 funded hours at a nursery?+
852 of the nurseries on Toddle say they accept funded hours. In England every 3 and 4 year old can get 15 hours a week for 38 weeks a year, some 2 year olds qualify too, and eligible working parents can get 30 hours a week from when their child is 9 months old until they start school. Nurseries can charge for extras such as meals, but paying for them can't be a condition of getting the funded hours.
What does an Ofsted Outstanding rating mean?+
Ofsted inspects nurseries in England. Outstanding is its highest overall grade, above Good, Requires improvement and Inadequate. 313 of the 1,015 nurseries on Toddle (31%) are rated Outstanding and 612 are rated Good. Ofsted is moving to a new style of report, so some newer inspections use different wording. Each nursery page links to its latest Ofsted report.
Can I see which nurseries have spaces?+
Many nurseries show whether they have spaces available, limited spaces or a waiting list, and you can filter the search by it. Places change quickly, so check with the nursery when you enquire.
When should I start looking for a nursery?+
As early as you can, especially for a baby place. Baby rooms are small and often fill first, so many parents start looking 6 to 12 months before they go back to work. 809 of the nurseries on Toddle take babies.
Should I choose a nursery or a childminder?+
A nursery cares for children in groups in a dedicated setting, usually with longer opening hours and staff who cover for each other. A childminder looks after a small group of children in their own home, often with more flexible hours and school runs. Both are registered and inspected by Ofsted, and both can offer funded hours.
