How much funded childcare can Oxfordshire families receive?
All 3 and 4 year olds can receive 15 funded hours a week, equivalent to 570 hours a year. Eligible working families can receive up to 30 funded hours a week from 9 months old until school age, giving up to 1,140 funded hours a year.
Do all Oxfordshire nurseries offer the full 30 funded hours?
No. Providers can decide whether to offer 15 hours, 30 hours or another funded pattern, and the number of funded places may also be limited. Eligibility therefore does not guarantee that every nursery can offer the timetable you want.
Can I split funded hours between two childcare providers?
Yes. Families can split funded childcare between eligible settings where the providers agree. For the 30 hour entitlement, a child can attend no more than two childcare sites in one day.
Can funded childcare be stretched across the year?
Yes, depending on the provider. Instead of using the full weekly entitlement over 38 weeks, families may be able to use fewer funded hours each week over more weeks of the year.
What nursery costs might I still have to pay?
The funded entitlement covers the childcare hours themselves. Providers may charge separately for additional hours, meals or other optional services, but parents cannot be required to buy extra hours to access their funded entitlement, and a packed lunch or similar alternative should be possible where meals are charged.
Can an Oxfordshire family use funded childcare outside the county?
Yes. A child can attend an eligible provider outside Oxfordshire. The funded place is then administered by the local authority where the childcare provider is located, rather than Oxfordshire County Council.
Does attending a school nursery guarantee a Reception place?
No. Attending a nursery class or maintained nursery linked to a school does not automatically secure a Reception place. Reception admission is handled separately through the school admissions process.
Is extra funding available for a child with SEND?
Yes. Oxfordshire has additional early years SEND funding for eligible children. From April 2026, Disability Access Fund is £975 per eligible child each year, and additional funding may also be available where a child has higher support needs within their early years setting.
